It becomes a number-juggling process as you balance the available electric and gas capacity against the need to cook, heat, light, refrigerate your food and power the water pump. There are certain preparations that can be taken before setting out, that will maximise the amount of time you can spend away from the electric nectar of the mains supply.
The first consideration is understanding how your leisure battery works — which provides the power when the engine is off. A typical leisure battery is rated at Ah, which means that if you draw 5A every hour from it thanks to your various electrical devices, it will last 20 hours before going from fully charged to flat. One way to extend the amount of power you have available is to add a second leisure battery but there are ways of doing that are efficient than others.

The unit can be charged via the mains and a 12v transformer, or trickle-charged by a connecting lead to the van main battery via the cigarette lighter socket. Basically the lights and the water pump go through a small fuse box to the battery. To trickle charge the battery pack, main van switch on, connecting wire connected. The cool box draws a lot of current, so is normally only used when the engine is running.
The cool box can be unplugged or switched off in normal conditions. Because the van battery connection has a switch built into the plug going into the cigarette lighter, it is easy to isolate the cool box from the dash when the engine is not running. In theory, with the connecting wire connected, the ignition on accessories and the master switch on, the battery pack would trickle charge the main van battery, but would blow fuses if the van battery was flat and the engine was cranked!
Explorer Camper Conversion
The inexpensive plug-in mains tester indicates any fault in the campsite mains supply, such as reverse polarity, or missing earth, and can also be used to test all the other socket outlets in the van. In our simple 12volt installation, the van and leisure batteries are kept entirely separate; the van starter battery cannot be used to power the fridge or any other 12volt item installed. In this instance we assume the solar panels are not producing a useable output.
There are alternatives to having a bank of switches, meters and lights mounted separately on a panel in this fashion.

Understanding electricity on the camp site! Almost all modern campsites have a provision for mains power supplies, delivered via an electrical hook up post within each ‘pitch’. This is by far the easiest way to power your television, laptop, hairdryer or even microwave on the go. But remember the camp site is responsible only for the safe delivery of electricity up to the outlet socket on the hook-up post. All campers have a responsibility to ensure that the cable from the post, the connection to their own caravan, motorhome or tent and that of the equipment being used is maintained to a safe level and respectful of other camp site users.
Sites will not accept responsibility for the use of any unsafe or unsuitable equipment and reserve the right to instruct campers to disconnect such equipment. It is their site and their power supply after all. Normally the supply is V 50Hz single phase, much the same as you would find at home. Always make sure your camping equipment conforms to these standards, a label on the back or the bottom of your device will usually have this data.
Your connection to the post must be fitted with a matching plug with either a suitable connection to your vehicle or a mobile mains on the other end. The MCB safely measures and limits the amount of current delivered to each pitch. Campsite mains supply have a maximum rating of 10 amps, although many have now increased this to 16 amps.
